Vista Hermosa is helping us support 250 children in India to attend pre school centers. These Pre Schools (Balwadis) provide nutritious meals, medicine, education & other material to 4,000 tribal children in Rajasthan, India. These centers also take care of immunization against the six preventable childhood diseases prevalent in India.
44% children in the age group of 0-3 years are underweight in Rajasthan according to NFHS -3. There is also a very high prevalence of anemia among children. In Udaipur district 75% children are anemic (As per a joint study by J-PAL at MIT, Vidya Bhawan and Seva Mandir in 2007-09); a reality which carries serious consequences for their healthy physical and cognitive development.
As families often face considerable economic hardship and parents tend to have a very limited experience of either quality education, quality child care or quality health, it is particularly difficult for communities to ensure that their children receive the inputs, support and spaces that are required to ensure their healthy mental and physical development.
These Balwadis in this context create an enabling environment for early childhood care and development for children 1-5 years old in rural communities of Udaipur. The program helps increase community contribution to and demand for quality center based early childhood care and development. By various activities and inputs it also aims to ensure overall cognitive and physical development of children and prepare them for school. Ultimately, these Balwadis enable caregivers (mothers or elder siblings) to attend to other important livelihood and/or educational activities.
