Women’s Empowerment and Seva Mandir
About Women’s Empowerment Programs
Engaged in a long-term effort to redress gender-based inequities that impede progress in rural Indian communities, Seva Mandir’s work focuses on uniting women from differing castes and backgrounds into social groups that create female agency in the political, judicial and economic institutions of village life. Through nearly 50 Women’s Forums and Resource Centers and more than 550 Savings and Credit Groups operating across 180 villages, the organization fosters a growing normalization of women’s independence, participation and leadership in their communities. To address the more immediate needs of individuals, Seva Mandir also provides a short stay sanctuary for women who seek to escape domestic violence, find their voice and forge a better future for themselves and their children.
